“About 35 years ago I was skiing in Utah when I learned the news that my mother, who had cancer, had unexpectedly taken a turn for the worse and I had to fly back east. While I was making my flight arrangements, I learned my mother had died.

I flew home the next day, curled into my window seat with tears running down my face. No one was in the middle seat, but a man was sitting on the aisle. I needed to use the bathroom and crossed over him to do so. When I returned, he had put a pillow on my seat. I never thanked him or said anything to him, but I appreciated it so very much. If you’re out there reading, thank you, sir!”
