“Back in middle school, I was the first one in my class to get a girlfriend. Everyone made a huge deal, except one of my teachers. We dated for a few weeks, then she dumped me. I was a mess, and as per usual, huge big deal.

I was sitting there, clearly sad in the hallway, just taking a minute, when the teacher walks by. It always seemed like he didn’t pay attention to me and her, but he gives me a look and says: ‘Don’t worry. I know it hurts, and I’m really sorry. Let’s pretend I didn’t realize you skipped class.’ He walked away without another word. It meant the world to me in that moment. I still think of him sometimes.”
