Today’s Inspiration 🌸

Act of Kindness

Today’s story of kindness comes from Reddit user Avocaado:

“In 2010 I briefly lived in Oakland with a girl I was dating, on the south side of Lake Merritt near the Lucky’s.

My girlfriend’s birthday was coming up and I really wanted to get a nice gift for her. I found this cool poster sized art print at a street fair, so I decided to get it framed.

But I was broke. I went into a custom frame shop downtown, there was an older woman in a wheelchair. I assume the owner, laid the poster on the workbench, took some measurements, gave me a quote well outside of my budget, like $200+. I told her I couldn’t afford it, and asked if I could somehow work to pay it off, maybe scrub their floors or pass out flyers or anything to at least get it at cost of materials. She said to leave the poster with her, she would frame it and think of something for me to do when I came back in a couple days.

When I came back a couple days later, she gave me the beautifully framed poster and told me no work or payment was necessary. I was moved by the gesture. It had been a tough time for me, and that one act of kindness did so much. I still think about it to this day. When I think of Oakland, I think of that kindness.”
